True Botanicals
Quick verdict: Most clean skincare asks you to trade results for a shorter ingredient list. True Botanicals is the brand that refuses the trade, and mostly gets away with it. It was the first MADE SAFE certified brand in the world, it’s a B Corp, and it runs actual clinical testing on its formulas rather than leaning on before-and-afters. The catch is the price, which is firmly in luxury territory. Our rating: 4.3 out of 5.
Who they are
Hillary Peterson founded True Botanicals in 2014 with Christina Mace-Turner, after a cancer diagnosis sent her looking at what was in the products she’d been using. That origin explains the brand’s unusual posture: it behaves less like a beauty company and more like one trying to prove a point about whether non-toxic and effective can coexist.
It’s independent and privately held, though it took a Series B from NextWorld Evergreen in 2023. As with every venture-backed brand in this directory, that’s a note rather than a mark against, and it’s the kind of thing we’d re-examine if ownership shifted.
What they get right
It was the world’s 0 , and the certification covers every product rather than a flagship few. MADE SAFE screens formulas against thousands of substances known or suspected to cause harm, which makes it one of the strictest marks available in personal care.
