Salt & Stone
Quick verdict: Almost every natural deodorant fails the same test, which is a hot day and something to do. Salt & Stone is the one that mostly passes. It’s aluminum-free, it was started by a former professional snowboarder who wanted something that worked under exertion, and it’s still independently owned. The case for it is performance rather than paperwork, and the paperwork is thin. Our rating: 3.7 out of 5.
Who they are
Nima Jalali founded Salt & Stone in Los Angeles in 2017, coming out of professional snowboarding rather than beauty. That origin explains the product priority: the brand exists because natural deodorant didn’t survive a day of physical activity, and the formulas were built to fix that specific failure.
It’s independent and founder-owned, with no parent company.
What they get right
It actually works, which is not a low bar in this category. The extra-strength formula holds through heat and exertion in a way most aluminum-free sticks don’t, and that’s the entire reason people switch and stay switched.
Aluminum-free, so it’s a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant. It stops odor rather than blocking sweat, which is the tradeoff the whole category is built on.
No baking soda in most formulas, which matters more than it sounds. Baking soda is the usual irritant that makes people abandon natural deodorant with a rash after two weeks.
