Quick verdict: Most sustainable bag brands solve the ethics and then charge you $200 for it. Terra Thread’s backpack is $77. The cotton is Fairtrade and Regenerative Organic Certified, the sewing happens in Fair Trade Certified factories, and the family that owns it also owns the certified B Corp that manufactures it. Who they are
Vik Giri started Gallant International in 2009, making organic cotton goods for other companies. Terra Thread came later, as the brand Gallant sells under its own name, and Vik runs it with his daughter Vizan. Neither company publishes the year the brand launched, so we’ve left that field blank rather than pick a number.
That relationship is the thing to understand about this profile. Terra Thread says on its own about page that Gallant is the parent, and trade press describes it the same way. Same founders, same family, no acquisition, nobody bought anybody. The kind of ownership answer that takes ten seconds to check and then stops being interesting, which is the best kind.
What they get right
The parent company’s B Corp certification is real, and Terra Thread says whose it is. Gallant International Inc. has been certified since March 2020 with a score of 95.9, which we read at B Lab rather than taking anyone’s word for. Terra Thread itself isn’t separately certified, and its own site says exactly that: the B Corp is the parent’s. After the number of brands we’ve caught claiming somebody else’s certificate as their own, a company volunteering the distinction unprompted is worth pointing at.
The cotton is traced further back than most brands manage. Terra Thread names the growing regions and the scale: 700-plus Regenerative Organic Certified farms across about 3,500 acres in Orissa and Telangana. Regenerative Organic is a demanding standard covering soil, animal welfare and farmer fairness, and Gallant reached it in 2022.
The price is the point. A $77 organic cotton backpack sits against $45 to $70 for a JanSport or a Herschel. That’s a small premium for a fully certified fiber, and it’s the reason this profile scores where it does. Sustainable shopping that requires a $200 buy-in only ever reaches people who already had $200.
It holds up. One reviewer put the Earth Backpack through more than three years of regular use and reported it carrying a laptop, gym kit or a weekend’s clothes without complaint.
Where they fall short
No warranty. No repair. No take-back. For a brand built on making things last, this is the hole in the middle. Returns run 14 days, you pay the shipping back, and apparel is final sale. Compare Patagonia or Cotopaxi, where a busted zip is somebody’s job. Here, a busted zip is yours.
“Fair Trade Certified” belongs to the factory, not to Terra Thread. The certificate is held by an Indian sewing factory, and Fair Trade USA lists Terra Thread as a brand partner rather than a certificate holder. Terra Thread words this correctly on its site, saying its products are made in Fair Trade Certified factories. We’re flagging it anyway because half the internet drops that distinction, and because the factory itself is never named. The cotton is traced to the field. The stitching isn’t traced to a building.
The GOTS claim can’t be checked at the issuer. Terra Thread says its goods are produced in line with the Global Organic Textile Standard. GOTS certifies facilities rather than consumer brands, so there’s no brand-level record to look up, and we couldn’t reach the GOTS database to trace the facility either. It’s canvas, and canvas gets wet. Reviewers consistently flag the lack of waterproofing and the thin internal organization. A laptop in an unlined cotton bag in a rainstorm is a bad afternoon.

Who it’s actually for
Buy Terra Thread if you want a plain, well-made organic cotton bag and you’d rather not pay a sustainability tax for it. Students, commuters, anyone replacing a synthetic backpack. It’s the most affordable fully certified cotton bag we’ve come across, and the family behind it manufactures the thing itself rather than ordering it from a stranger.
Skip it if you need weather protection, lots of pockets, or the reassurance of a warranty. And if you’re carrying an expensive laptop through real weather, buy something coated.
