Caprylhydroxamic Acid: Safe, With One Catch
In 2016, dermatologists across Finland started seeing the same thing. Patients turning up with itchy, inflamed rashes, all of them using the same brand of moisturizer, a pharmacy staple called Apobase that had been on shelves for years without incident.
The cream hadn’t changed much. Its preservative had.
Thirty-nine of those patients were patch tested at four Finnish clinics. The results came back clean for the old formula. They came back positive for the new one, for the preservative blend inside it, and for one specific ingredient in that blend: caprylhydroxamic acid. The other two parts of the blend, phenoxyethanol and methylpropanediol, tested negative. The team published the finding in Contact Dermatitis in 2017 and called it what it was, an epidemic of allergic contact dermatitis from a new allergen. The preservative was pulled from the product in Finland that same year.
So when you find caprylhydroxamic acid on a bottle that markets itself as gentle and clean, that’s the history sitting behind it. Now here’s the part that keeps it in perspective.
Why it’s in your products at all
Caprylhydroxamic acid, sometimes shortened to CHA, is a chelating agent derived from coconut oil. Chelating agents grab hold of trace metals in a formula, which sounds like housekeeping but matters a lot: those metals feed microbial growth and speed up spoilage.
It also stops bacteria and mold from multiplying, which is why it gets used as a preservative in practice even though that isn’t its official job description.
Its real selling point is pH. Most gentle preservatives stop working in alkaline formulas, which rules them out for a lot of products. CHA keeps working. For a brand trying to build a “clean” preservative system without reaching for parabens or formaldehyde releasers, that flexibility is hard to replace, and it’s why the ingredient spread so fast through natural skincare in the last decade.
What the safety panel concluded
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review assessed it and found it safe in cosmetics at the levels currently used, which run roughly 0.05% to 0.25%.
Read the fine print, though, because the panel didn’t stop at “safe.” It added a caution, and the caution is the whole story: it warned against using caprylhydroxamic acid in ways that would increase how much of it gets into the skin. The positive sensitization results the panel looked at lined up with use on damaged skin.
That’s a meaningful distinction. On intact skin, this ingredient has a good record. On skin that’s already cracked, raw, or compromised, more of it gets through, and getting more of it through is how a sensitivity develops in the first place.
Which is a slightly awkward fact for a category of product that people buy because their skin is a mess.
How worried should you be? Not very.
The 2016 outbreak was traced to one product line in one country, and it was fixed within the year. Since then the published record has stayed thin. A case report in Contact Dermatitis in 2025 described a 70-year-old woman in Toulouse with a strong reaction to a CHA-containing product, and the authors noted it appeared to be the first case described since the Apobase reformulation was undone in 2016.
One case in nine years is not a public health story. It’s a reason to know the name.
The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database lands in about the same place: a hazard score of 1, the lowest available, with low ratings across cancer and reproductive toxicity. The one category where it doesn’t score straight low is allergies and immunotoxicity, which is exactly where you’d expect the dermatology literature to show up.
When this ingredient is worth checking for
Most people can ignore it completely. But there are three situations where I’d look:
You’ve developed a rash from a moisturizer you’d been using happily for months. Contact allergy works on a delay, so the product that’s hurting you now is often one you tolerated fine for a long stretch. Check what changed.
You’re applying something to broken skin. Eczema patches, a healing wound, cracked hands in winter. This is the scenario the safety panel flagged, and it’s worth choosing a product without CHA while the barrier repairs.
You already patch-test positive to preservatives. If you’ve reacted to methylisothiazolinone or formaldehyde releasers before, add this one to the list you hand your dermatologist. It won’t be on a standard patch test series, which is precisely why the Toulouse case took testing the patient’s own products to catch.
On labels it shows up as caprylhydroxamic acid, caprylohydroxamic acid, or occasionally as part of a trade-named blend, which is the frustrating bit. A blend name tells you nothing.
The verdict
I’d use it. I wouldn’t avoid a good product over it, and I’d be annoyed at anyone selling you a fear-based swap.
But I’d want you to know the name, because the difference between “this ingredient is dangerous” and “this ingredient is a known sensitizer with a real outbreak behind it” is the difference between panic and being able to solve your own rash. Most ingredient scares don’t come with a case series at all. This one does, and it’s small, and it’s specific, which makes it far more useful than a scary-sounding molecule with nothing behind it.

Is caprylhydroxamic acid a paraben?
No. It’s a coconut-derived chelating agent, chemically unrelated to parabens, and it’s often used precisely so a brand can skip them. The two get lumped together only because both preserve products.
Is caprylhydroxamic acid safe during pregnancy?
There’s nothing in the safety review flagging reproductive or developmental risk, and it rates low for both in EWG’s database. The known issue with this ingredient is skin sensitization, not systemic toxicity. As always, run anything you’re unsure about past your own doctor rather than a website.
What does caprylhydroxamic acid do in skincare?
It binds trace metals that would otherwise feed microbial growth, and it slows bacteria and mold. Unusually for a gentle preservative, it keeps working in alkaline formulas, which is why it turns up in so many natural and “clean” products.
Can caprylhydroxamic acid cause acne?
There’s no evidence linking it to breakouts. If a product containing it is making your skin worse, an irritant or allergic reaction is a likelier explanation than clogged pores, and those look different: redness, itch, and swelling rather than blackheads.
