Methylpropanediol in Skincare: Is It Safe?

21.2%.

That’s the highest reported level of methylpropanediol in a cosmetic product, according to the industry survey the US safety panel worked from. Body and hand products, specifically. More than a fifth of the bottle.

For scale, the preservatives that generate all the label anxiety typically sit under 1%. So here’s an ingredient people almost never ask about, used at levels that dwarf the ones they do. Worth a look, right?

It’s been looked at. Twice, from completely different directions, and it came out clean both times.

The label job nobody notices

Methylpropanediol, sometimes written as 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol or shortened to MP diol, is a small alcohol-based liquid that does the unglamorous work in a formula.

It’s a solvent, so it dissolves things that won’t dissolve in water and spreads them evenly through the product. It’s a humectant, so it pulls water toward your skin and holds it there, which is the same trick glycerin and hyaluronic acid pull. And formulators use it to help other ingredients absorb better, which is why you’ll find it sitting near actives like salicylic acid on an ingredient list.

There’s a fourth reason it’s popular, and it’s the one that put it in your “clean” products. Paired with a real preservative, it makes that preservative work harder, so the brand can use less. If you’ve been reading labels looking for what replaced the parabens, this sort of ingredient is a large part of the answer.

Cleared the first time: Finland, 2016

The first clearance came by accident.

When a widely used Finnish moisturizer called Apobase was reformulated with a new three-part preservative blend, dermatologists started seeing patients with itchy, angry rashes. Thirty-nine of them were patch tested across four clinics, and the team published the results in Contact Dermatitis.

Methylpropanediol was one of the three ingredients in that blend. It tested negative. So did phenoxyethanol. The reactions traced cleanly to the third component, caprylhydroxamic acid, which was pulled from the product that year.

That’s a stronger kind of evidence than a lab study, because it’s a real-world outbreak with a control built in. Same patients, same product, same blend, three suspects. Two walked.

Cleared the second time: the safety panel

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review published its assessment of alkane diols, the chemical family methylpropanediol belongs to, in 2018. Ten ingredients went in. Seven came out cleared, methylpropanediol among them. The other three, including octanediol, were sent back for insufficient data, which tells you the panel wasn’t simply waving the group through.

The sensitization testing is where this gets interesting, and where I’d rather show you the messy version than the tidy one.

One test did flag mild sensitization potential. The study’s own authors couldn’t say whether what they were seeing was true allergy, plain irritation, or an underlying skin condition in the subjects. A second test applied methylpropanediol at 21.2%, that same top-of-range level, at both induction and challenge. Some subjects got redness and damage to the outer skin layer during the induction phase.

Then those same subjects were retested on a fresh patch of skin, and the reactions didn’t reproduce. In that test, methylpropanediol was non-sensitizing.

Which is a real result and not a spotless one. At the very top of its use range, on skin that’s been under a patch for days, it can be irritating. That’s true of a lot of humectants, including ones with much friendlier reputations.

What’s worth knowing instead

Not toxicity. Absorption.

Methylpropanediol helps other ingredients get through your skin barrier. That’s the point of it, and in a well-built product it’s a benefit: your retinol or your salicylic acid works better because more of it arrives.

But absorption enhancement isn’t selective. Whatever else is in the bottle gets a bit more help too. In a short, well-formulated ingredient list, that’s fine. In a product with a long tail of ingredients you can’t evaluate, undisclosed “fragrance” among them, an absorption booster is doing you no favors.

So the question I’d ask isn’t “is methylpropanediol safe.” It’s “what else is in this, and do I want more of it going in?”

That reframe is worth more than any single ingredient verdict, and it applies well beyond this one bottle.

The verdict

Use it without a second thought. Two independent lines of evidence cleared it, one of them a real outbreak investigation where it was a named suspect and came back negative.

The Environmental Working Group scores it a 1, the lowest hazard rating available, with low irritation risk. The one caveat on that entry is worth repeating honestly: EWG marks its data availability as “Limited,” meaning the published research on this ingredient is thinner than for something like hydroxyacetophenone. Cleared is not the same as exhaustively studied. It’s the best answer currently available, and there’s no signal anywhere suggesting it’s the wrong one.

If your skin reacts to a product containing it, look first at the actives, the essential oils, and the fragrance. This ingredient is rarely the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is methylpropanediol the same as propylene glycol?

No, though they’re both small diols and get confused constantly. Propylene glycol is 1,2-propanediol; methylpropanediol is 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol. The panel reviewed them separately and cleared both, but propylene glycol carries the caveat that it must be formulated to be non-irritating, and it has a much longer history of contact allergy reports behind it.

What is methylpropanediol made from?

It’s made industrially, starting from allyl alcohol. Some suppliers offer versions from plant-derived feedstocks rather than petroleum, so a brand can call it plant-derived while the molecule is identical either way. The source affects the product’s carbon footprint, not how it behaves on your face.

Does methylpropanediol clog pores?

There’s no evidence that it does. It’s water-loving rather than oily, which is the opposite of the profile that causes problems for acne-prone skin. If a product is breaking you out, look at the oils and butters further up the list.

Is methylpropanediol safe in pregnancy?

Nothing in the safety assessment raises reproductive or developmental concerns, and it rates low in those categories in EWG’s database. The known issues with this ingredient are irritation at high levels, not systemic effects. Run any specific worry past your own doctor rather than a website.
