Why Does Baking Soda Deodorant Give You a Rash?
You switched to natural deodorant. Four days in, your underarms are red, hot, and sting in the shower. Somebody told you this is the detox phase and to push through.
It isn’t. Please don’t.
Short answer: the rash is almost always baking soda, and it’s irritation rather than allergy. Your skin surface sits at a pH of about 4.7. Baking soda dissolved in sweat runs around 8.3. Pushing skin that far alkaline switches on enzymes that dissolve the protein rivets holding your outer skin cells together, and it starts happening in under 20 minutes. Switch to a baking-soda-free formula and it usually stops within a week.
The acid mantle isn’t marketing
Skin keeps an acidic film on its surface on purpose. A 2006 study of 330 people measured forearm pH at 5.12, then let it sit for 24 hours untouched by soap, water or product, and it drifted down to 4.93. The authors put the true natural value at around 4.7.
That acidity does two jobs. It keeps the good resident bacteria attached to your skin, and it keeps the enzymes that break skin apart switched off.
Now the alkaline side. Sodium bicarbonate registers about 8.3 in solution, which is roughly a thousandfold less acidic than your skin wants to be.
What alkalinity actually does, step by step
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why the rash appears fast and fades slowly.
A 2003 paper in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology raised the pH of the outer skin layer with a base and watched what happened. Serine proteases activated in under 20 minutes. Those enzymes went to work on desmoglein 1, the protein that rivets your surface skin cells to each other, and the corneodesmosomes holding the layer together came apart. Separately, barrier repair slowed down, because the enzyme that processes skin lipids works poorly at high pH.
Two injuries, then. The cells stop sticking together, and the repair crew slows down at the same moment. Add inhibitors to block those enzymes and the cohesion loss reversed, which is how you know pH was the cause rather than a bystander.
Why the armpit is the worst possible place for it
Everything about the underarm makes it the maximum-difficulty site.
It’s occluded, so whatever you apply stays in contact instead of evaporating. It’s warm and wet, which means the baking soda dissolves fully rather than sitting there as inert powder. Dermatology treats it as a biologically distinct site needing its own care, and skin there absorbs far more than forearm skin does.
Then there’s shaving. A 2003 study on axillary skin found that pre-shaving a patch test site increased irritation, that daily shaving produced more visible irritation than weekly, and that itch and flare responses were amplified afterward. If you shave and apply in the same five minutes, you’ve stacked mechanical damage under a strongly alkaline product.
Irritant, not allergic, and the difference matters
An irritant reaction is direct injury to the skin barrier. No immune memory, dose-dependent, confined to where the stuff touched, and it happens to most people if the exposure is strong enough. Allergic contact dermatitis is different: a delayed immune response, usually 24 to 72 hours after contact, requiring prior sensitization, and it needs a patch test to confirm.
Baking soda behaves like the first one. Stinging fast, worse with heavier application, worse right after shaving, better as soon as you stop.
We should flag one thing here, because we’d want somebody to flag it to us. There’s no published clinical case series specifically on baking soda deodorant rash. The chemistry is well established and the barrier science is solid, but connecting the two to your armpit is a mechanism, not a trial result. You’ll also see a claim that 20 to 30 percent of people react. We couldn’t trace that figure to anything but blog posts selling baking-soda-free sticks, so we won’t repeat it.
The magnesium hydroxide surprise
Here’s the part that made us go back and check twice.
Magnesium hydroxide, the ingredient most baking-soda-free brands swap in, is the more alkaline of the two. A slurry runs 9.5 to 10.5. Baking soda is 8.3. By pH alone, the replacement looks worse.
It isn’t, and the reason is solubility. Baking soda dissolves at 9.3 grams per 100 milliliters of water. Magnesium hydroxide manages 0.0009. That’s about ten thousand times less soluble, so in the damp of a real armpit it mostly stays a powder sitting on the surface instead of becoming an alkaline solution pressed against your barrier. The alkalinity never gets delivered.
Which is a good reminder that the number on a spec sheet and the behavior in use are not the same thing.
Zinc ricinoleate is the other common substitute, and it works differently again by binding odor molecules rather than changing pH. Worth knowing that a 2024 case report in Contact Dermatitis described allergic contact dermatitis to zinc ricinoleate in a natural deodorant. Rare, but real, and a reminder that “gentle” isn’t a guarantee for everyone.
What to actually do about it
Stop using it. Today, not after the detox week that isn’t a detox.
Give the skin five to seven days bare, or use a plain unscented balm if you need something. Skip shaving while it’s angry.
Then buy a formula with magnesium hydroxide, zinc ricinoleate or arrowroot instead of sodium bicarbonate. It’ll say baking-soda-free on the front, and if it doesn’t, the ingredient list will settle it in three seconds. When you restart, apply to dry skin, use less than feels right, and leave a day between shaving and applying if you can.
If it’s still angry after two weeks off, it isn’t the baking soda and it’s worth a dermatologist and a patch test, because fragrance and alkyl glucosides both show up in natural deodorants and both are real allergens.

Is the natural deodorant detox period real?
Not as it’s usually described. Your armpits aren’t purging toxins. Two real things do happen: the skin’s bacterial population shifts over a couple of weeks after years of antiperspirant, and baking soda irritates a lot of people from day one. The first settles on its own. The second is not something to push through, and switching formula ends it.
How long does a baking soda rash take to heal?
Most people see the redness and stinging fade within three to seven days of stopping, and the skin barrier itself takes a couple of weeks to fully rebuild. Peeling in the second week is normal and doesn’t mean it’s getting worse. If nothing has improved after two weeks, something else is going on.
Can I keep using baking soda deodorant if I apply less?
Sometimes, yes. It’s a dose-dependent irritation, so a thin layer on completely dry skin, never straight after shaving, is tolerable for some people. But once your barrier is damaged it reacts to less than it used to, so if you’ve already had a rash the odds are against you.
Does a lower-pH or “buffered” baking soda deodorant help?
A little, and less than the label suggests. Baking soda’s whole job is to be alkaline, so a formula that truly neutralized it wouldn’t work. Brands adding acids to buffer are moving in the right direction, but if your skin has reacted once, the cleaner answer is a formula that leaves it out.
