Why Stretch Jeans Can’t Be Recycled

Check the label on the jeans you’re wearing. If they have any give at all, you’ll find something like 98% cotton, 2% elastane.

Two percent sounds like nothing. It’s the difference between jeans that can theoretically become new jeans and jeans that can’t.

That small number is doing something structural, not decorative, and it’s worth understanding before you write off every stretch pair in your closet.

A blend is a different material

Cotton recycling, at its most basic, is mechanical. Old fabric is shredded back into loose fiber and respun into new yarn. It works, with the caveat that shredding shortens the fibers, so recycled cotton is usually blended with fresh cotton for strength.

Elastane breaks that process. It isn’t a separate thread you could pull out; it’s spun into the core of the yarn and woven through the entire fabric. Shred the fabric and you get cotton fiber contaminated with elastic filament that behaves nothing like cotton in a spinning mill.

Chemical recycling, which dissolves cotton back to cellulose, has the same trouble from the other direction. The process is designed for cellulose, and elastane is a polyurethane that doesn’t belong in that chemistry.

A 2024 Textile Exchange assessment put the practical penalty at 30% to 50% harder to recycle industrially for spandex-containing denim, and recyclers commonly treat about 5% elastic content as the ceiling above which a garment simply isn’t worth processing.

Why it’s in there anyway

Because people like it, and that’s a real answer rather than a cynical one.

Stretch denim fits a wider range of bodies without custom tailoring, it’s more comfortable to sit down in, and it holds a shape through the day. Rigid denim does none of that until you’ve broken it in, which takes weeks of wearing.

Typical comfort stretch runs 1% to 3% elastane. Higher-stretch styles, jeggings and the like, can run to 10% or more, which puts them firmly outside anything a recycler would touch.

There’s a durability angle too, and it cuts against the stretch pair. Elastane degrades faster than cotton. It’s what gives out first, which is why stretch jeans bag out at the knee and lose their snap while the cotton around them is still perfectly sound. A rigid pair that fades and softens for a decade may be the more sustainable garment before recycling ever enters the conversation.

The fibers replacing it

This is a solvable problem, and a few brands are solving it in two different ways.

The first is mechanical stretch: weaving techniques and yarn constructions that give fabric some give without adding a plastic filament. It’s less stretchy than elastane and it’s genuine 100% cotton, which means it stays recyclable.

The second is a drop-in replacement. Plant-based and recyclable stretch fibers now exist that behave like elastane in wear but don’t defeat recycling in the same way. If you want the simplest rule: for jeans you intend to keep and eventually recycle, look for 100% cotton or a named recyclable stretch fiber. For jeans you want to be comfortable in today, buy the stretch and then keep them for years, because a garment worn for a decade beats a recyclable one replaced every season.

Can jeans with elastane be recycled at all?

Not usually into new fabric. They can sometimes be downcycled into insulation, wiping cloths or stuffing, which is better than landfill but is a one-way trip rather than a loop. Some take-back programs accept them for exactly that. Fiber-to-fiber recycling generally needs the blend to be under roughly 5% elastic content.

How do I find out how much elastane my jeans contain?

The composition label inside the waistband is required to list it, usually as elastane, spandex or Lycra, which are all the same class of fiber under different names. If a pair stretches noticeably and the label says 100% cotton, it’s likely a mechanical stretch weave.

Does elastane shed microplastics?

Yes, like any synthetic fiber, elastane sheds during washing. Are rigid jeans actually more sustainable?
