Indigo Dye and Aniline: What Makes Denim Blue, and What It Costs
The blue in your jeans almost certainly never touched a plant.
Natural indigo, extracted from Indigofera leaves, was one of the most valuable trade goods in the world until a German chemist worked out how to synthesize it in the late 1800s. Synthetic indigo is cheaper, more consistent, and available in the volumes a global denim industry needs. It won completely.
That’s not automatically bad. Growing enough indigo plants to dye a billion pairs of jeans a year would take an enormous amount of land. The problem isn’t that the dye is synthetic. It’s what comes along with it.
The chemical nobody puts on the label
Making synthetic indigo involves aniline, and not all of it ends up bound into the pigment. Some rides along in the finished dye and washes out during dyeing and rinsing.
The scale is the part that lands. Industry reporting puts it at roughly 400 metric tons of aniline waste a year from indigo production, with about two thirds of that going into wastewater discharge and, from there, into rivers and lakes. Aniline is classed as very toxic to aquatic life.
You will not find it mentioned on a hangtag, because it isn’t an ingredient anyone adds on purpose. It’s a residue of how the color is made.
Dye that doesn’t stay put
There’s a second problem, separate from aniline, and it’s a property of indigo itself.
Indigo is not water-soluble, which is why it has to be chemically reduced into a soluble form before it will attach to cotton, then oxidized back on the fiber. That’s the trick that makes denim fade the way it does: the dye sits on the outside of the yarn rather than penetrating it, so it wears off with the fabric.
It also means a meaningful share of the dye never attaches at all. Reviews of textile effluent put dye loss during dyeing across the industry somewhere between 2% and 50% depending on process and dye class, and what’s lost leaves in the water, deeply colored. Color blocks sunlight in a river, which is a problem before you reach any question of toxicity.
Denim’s wet processing uses less water than growing the cotton does, as we cover in the water footprint of jeans. But it returns that water in far worse condition, which is why the two stages need to be judged differently.
What better looks like
The encouraging development is that aniline turned out to be removable rather than inherent. Archroma commercialized an aniline-free indigo, and a number of denim mills have moved to it. This is one of the cleaner examples of an industry problem with an actual technical fix rather than an offset.
Alongside that, some mills now use pre-reduced liquid indigo, which cuts the harsh reducing chemistry, and foam or nitrogen dyeing methods that use dramatically less water per meter of fabric.
What you can check as a shopper is thinner than we’d like. Brands using aniline-free or low-impact indigo tend to say so by name, because it cost them something. Silence isn’t proof of the opposite, but a brand that will describe its dyehouse in specifics is telling you more than one that just says “eco-friendly wash.” That distinction is the whole subject of our greenwashing guide.

Is natural indigo better than synthetic?
Not straightforwardly. Natural indigo avoids the aniline question entirely, and for small-batch or artisan denim it’s a real option. At industry scale the land and crop demands would be enormous, and natural dyeing still needs reducing agents to fix the color. For most jeans, aniline-free synthetic indigo is the more realistic improvement.
Does the dye in my jeans touch my skin?
Indigo sits on the surface of the yarn, which is why new raw denim can transfer color onto light upholstery or skin, a phenomenon called crocking. It’s mostly a laundry annoyance rather than a health concern. The environmental case against indigo is about what happens at the mill, not what happens on your legs.
Do darker jeans pollute more than light ones?
Darker shades take more dye, so more dye is involved from the start. But the pale, faded, distressed looks require aggressive finishing after dyeing to strip color back out, which brings its own chemical and, historically, human cost. Neither end of the shade range is automatically the cleaner choice.
How can I tell if a brand uses cleaner dyeing?
Look for named processes and named partners rather than adjectives: aniline-free indigo, pre-reduced indigo, foam dyeing, a named mill, or a published wastewater standard. Brands doing this invested in it and generally say which. Vague “sustainably dyed” language with no method behind it is worth nothing.
