Quick verdict: Boyish has one of the deepest fiber-certification stacks of any brand in our denim roundup, and it’s vegan down to the patch and the thread, which almost no denim brand manages. It also carries a climate certification in third-party listings that has expired. Our rating: 4.0 out of 5.
Who they are
Jordan Nodarse founded Boyish in Los Angeles in 2019, coming at denim from the vintage angle: retro cuts, older silhouettes, and an explicit aim to cut waste in a category that generates enormous amounts of it. Independent, founder-led, no parent company.
What they get right
The fiber certifications go deep, and they’re all audited. GOTS and the Organic Content Standard on organic cotton, Global Recycled Standard on recycled fabrics, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for chemical residue in the finished garment. That last one is worth calling out because it certifies what’s actually left in the fabric against your skin, which most fiber certifications don’t address at all.
It’s vegan right through, including the parts brands forget. The patch and the threads too, not just the absence of a leather tag, and it’s PETA-Approved Vegan. Conventional denim patches are usually leather, so this takes real work rather than a swapped label.
Plant-based stretch. Boyish uses Tencel lyocell and Refibra in place of some conventional synthetic stretch, which is a step toward the problem Triarchy solved outright with natural rubber.
Waste is the founding idea. Deadstock fabric, cutting waste, recycled paper hang tags and recycled metal hardware. The brand was built around offcuts rather than adding a recycled line later.
Supplier certifications are named, with factories holding WRAP, GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Cradle to Cradle or bluesign.
Where they fall short
The climate certification has expired, and it’s still in circulation. Boyish is widely listed as Climate Neutral certified. Two things are wrong with that today. The Climate Neutral mark was retired in 2025 and replaced by The Climate Label under a different standard, so the old name means nothing on its own. And the certifier’s own register now returns an explicit notice for this brand: its certification has expired and it is no longer meeting the requirements of The Climate Label Certified Standard. That’s the issuer saying it, not us inferring it. The fiber certifications above all check out; this one doesn’t, and any roundup still repeating it is out of date.
No company-level certification. Everything verified here certifies fabric. There’s no B Corp, and no Fair Wear-style assessment of purchasing practices, which is the gap Nudie Jeans fills with an independently scored 91 out of 100.
