Is Recycled Polyester Actually Better Than Virgin?
Pick up almost any pair of sustainable leggings and the story is the same: made from recycled bottles. It’s on the swing tag, it’s in the ad, it’s the whole pitch.
Short answer: it’s better than virgin polyester, and it’s a smaller win than the marketing implies. The energy and carbon savings are real but come with a huge range. The loop isn’t closed, because 98 percent of recycled polyester comes from bottles rather than old clothes, and a bottle that becomes a legging can’t become a bottle again. And the microfiber question has two peer-reviewed studies that disagree with each other.
Start with the number, and keep its range
The carbon and energy figures you see quoted all trace back to one place: a 2010 lifecycle study of bottle-to-fiber recycling. It found energy savings of 40 to 85 percent and greenhouse gas savings of 25 to 75 percent against virgin polyester.
Look at those spreads. The difference between 25 and 75 percent isn’t measurement noise, it’s the analyst choosing how to split the environmental burden between the bottle’s first life and its second. Three defensible methods, three different answers.
So when a brand tells you recycled polyester cuts emissions by a specific percentage, they’ve picked a number off that range and dropped the rest. The direction is right. The precision is invented.
Bottles become clothes. Clothes become landfill
Here’s the structural problem, and it’s the one worth understanding.
Textile Exchange’s 2025 materials report puts global fiber production at 132 million tonnes, with polyester at 59 percent of it. Recycled polyester reached about 9.3 million tonnes in 2024, and 98 percent of that came from plastic bottles.
Less than 1 percent of the world’s fiber comes from recycled textiles. Clothes are not becoming clothes.
What’s happening instead is that bottles are becoming clothes, once, and then stopping. A PET bottle can be recycled back into a bottle repeatedly. Spun into fabric, blended with elastane and dyed, it leaves the loop for good and heads to landfill at the end of its life.
That has a knock-on effect people don’t expect. Beverage recyclers say textiles are outbidding them for recycled PET, with recycled material carrying a 30 percent-plus premium over virgin in Europe. Meanwhile EU rules require 25 percent recycled content in PET beverage bottles from 2025 and 30 percent in all beverage bottles by 2030. Two industries, one feedstock.
And the share is going backwards. Recycled polyester’s slice of total polyester actually fell from 12.5 percent to 12 percent in a year, because virgin production is growing faster than recycling can keep up.
What the certifications do and don’t promise
Two standards turn up on labels and they aren’t equivalent.
The Recycled Claim Standard applies from 5 percent recycled content and covers one thing: chain of custody. Where the material came from, tracked through the supply chain.
The Global Recycled Standard applies from 20 percent, needs 50 percent for product-level labeling, and adds three whole sections the RCS doesn’t have: social criteria covering forced and child labor, freedom of association, health and safety, wages and hours; environmental criteria on chemicals, energy, water and effluent; and a restricted substances list tied to the ZDHC programme.
So GRS is doing considerably more work. It’s also candid about its own limits, stating that it does not address the chemicals already present in the reclaimed material. A bottle carries whatever it carried.
The greenwashing case everyone gets wrong
In June 2022, Norway’s Consumer Authority ruled that a brand’s environmental marketing built on Higg Index data was misleading and therefore prohibited, and warned a second brand the same day. The industry body running the index paused its consumer-facing programme within two weeks and commissioned an independent review, its previous one having been carried out in 2016.
Now the part that gets misremembered. The Norwegian case wasn’t about polyester at all. The claim under scrutiny was about organic cotton, and the regulator found the headline water savings were largely an artifact of where organic farms happen to sit on the rainfall map.
The regulator’s other findings are the ones to carry forward: the underlying dataset was only valid to 2017, the lifecycle assessments behind it explicitly said they weren’t designed for comparative claims, and the index covered four cradle-to-gate categories with no microplastics, no end-of-life and no biodiversity in them.
The Dutch regulator closed a parallel case that September, with two large retailers paying a combined 900,000 euros to sustainability causes over their green marketing.
Does recycled shed more microplastics
This is where we’d love to give you a clean answer and can’t.
A 2024 study from Empa, the Swiss materials lab, found no statistically significant difference in fiber release between virgin and recycled fabrics, and concluded that fabric structure mattered more than feedstock.
A 2026 study in Environmental Science and Technology agreed for once-recycled polyester, then found something else: fabric recycled twice released about 4.3 times more fiber in the wash, and three times about 6.2 times more. Recycling degrades the polymer, and shorter chains shed.
Both of those can be true. Today’s rPET is nearly all first-generation bottle material, so the Empa result is the one that describes what’s in your drawer. The second one describes where the industry is trying to go, which is a genuine concern for actual textile-to-textile recycling.
Either way, every synthetic garment sheds, and a wash bag does more for that than the feedstock does.
What we’d actually tell you
Buy recycled polyester over virgin. It’s a real improvement and the direction of travel is right.
Then hold it to a lower ceiling than the marketing sets. It doesn’t make a synthetic garment biodegradable, it doesn’t stop it shedding, and the bottle it came from would probably have had a longer useful life staying a bottle.
Look for GRS rather than RCS if you want the label to mean something beyond provenance, and treat any brand quoting a single confident percentage saving as having chosen its favorite number. That’s the same instinct we apply in our Lululemon investigation and across the activewear roundup.
