GOLS Natural Latex vs Synthetic and Blended Latex

Here’s a word that means nothing in American law. Natural.

The FTC’s Green Guides run to seventeen sections covering compostable, degradable, recyclable, renewable and non-toxic. The Commission has said outright that the Guides don’t address “sustainable,” “natural” or “organic.” So a latex mattress can be called natural with a substantial share of styrene-butadiene rubber inside it, and nobody’s broken a rule.

Short answer: GOLS is the certification that closes that hole, and the common summary of it is wrong. People say GOLS allows 5 percent synthetic. It doesn’t. The standard requires the polymer to be 100 percent natural latex and the synthetic share to be literally zero. The 5 percent is processing chemicals and filler.

Read the standard and it says something stricter

The Global Organic Latex Standard is written and run by Control Union Certifications, a Dutch certification body, and the current version dates to January 2017.

The wording that matters: a product “shall contain a minimum 95% certified natural rubber latex of its total weight of polymer content,” with a maximum 5 percent processing chemicals or filler in the final product, and it “shall not contain synthetic latex and/or non-organic natural rubber latex.”

Read that carefully, because the 95 percent is a share of the polymer, and the remaining 5 percent is the vulcanizing agents and zinc oxide you need to turn liquid latex into foam. The test table settles any doubt: the natural portion of the polymer must be 100, and the synthetic portion must be zero.

GOLS also carries emission limits. Total VOCs at or under 200 micrograms per cubic meter over seven days, formaldehyde at 24, nitrosamines at 0.3. And it runs a full chain of custody: scope certificates at the latex collection point, the centrifuging plant, the factory and the retailer, annual audits at each, and transaction certificates required on every shipment whether the buyer asks or not.

So what is SBR, and why do blends exist

Styrene-butadiene rubber is a synthetic copolymer, roughly three parts butadiene to one part styrene, made from petroleum.

It’s cheaper than Hevea latex. It’s also more consistent. Its weaknesses are the ones you’d feel in a mattress: low resilience, low tear strength, poor strength without reinforcing filler, and a tendency to harden with age rather than soften. It’s better than natural rubber on abrasion, which matters for tires and not for beds.

Blended latex isn’t a scandal. It’s a legitimate cheaper product, and a lot of people sleep happily on it for years. What’s not legitimate is selling it under a word that implies the other thing.

Dunlop and Talalay, minus the folklore

Both are ways of turning liquid latex into foam, and both work with natural latex, synthetic latex, or a blend. Neither process is inherently organic.

Dunlop came first, in 1929. Whip the latex into a froth, pour it into a mold, vulcanize. It’s simpler, denser, and the foam settles slightly during curing so the bottom ends up firmer than the top.

Talalay adds two steps. The mold is only partly filled, then a vacuum pulls the bubbles out to fill it, which gives a more even and airier cell structure. Then it’s flash-frozen to around minus 20 Fahrenheit and carbon dioxide is pushed through to trigger gelation before it’s vulcanized at 230 degrees.

Here’s the part worth knowing before you shop. Talalay is where the blends live. Talalay Global blends styrene-butadiene rubber with Hevea latex; Vita Talalay in the Netherlands produces a Talalay product without it. You’ll find a specific natural-to-synthetic ratio quoted all over the internet, and we’re not going to repeat it, because it traces to retailers rather than to any manufacturer or standard. Ask the brand for the number in writing instead.

What we can say: we couldn’t find a Talalay producer on Control Union’s GOLS client list. That’s absence of evidence rather than proof, but if a GOLS certificate matters to you, Dunlop is where you’ll find one.

The allergy question flips the answer

This is the surprise in the topic. It runs the opposite way to what people expect.

A 1999 study in International Archives of Allergy and Immunology tried to extract latex allergens from mattresses. From synthetic foam, no protein or allergen could be extracted at all. From natural latex mattresses, they pulled proteins that reacted with the IgE of latex-allergic patients, and identified Hev b 1 among them. The researchers concluded natural latex mattresses are a potential source of sensitization and could pose a risk to allergic people. A follow-up suggested Hev b 1 may be the last protein to wash out of latex products.

For scale: NIOSH puts sensitization at 8 to 12 percent of regularly exposed healthcare workers and 1 to 6 percent of the general population. NIOSH also makes the point directly, that several synthetic rubbers get called latex and don’t release the proteins that cause reactions.

So the organic, certified, all-natural mattress is the one with the allergen in it, and the blended one is hypoallergenic. If you have a known latex allergy, this is the section that matters more than the rest of the article.

What we’d tell a friend

If the mattress is the thing you’re buying, ask for the GOLS certificate number and check it. A brand that has one will hand it over in a sentence. A brand that answers with the word “natural” and nothing else has told you what you needed to know, which is the same move we unpick in the greenwashing guide.

Allergic to latex? Skip all of it and look at the coil-and-wool builds instead.

If budget is the constraint, a blend is a real product and we’d rather you bought one knowingly than paid an organic premium for it by accident. Just make sure the rest of the bed is honest too, since latex says nothing about the fire barrier or the cover.

And keep the certifications in their lanes. GOLS covers the latex, GOTS covers the cotton and wool, and CertiPUR-US covers polyurethane foam, which is a different material answering a different question.

Prevalence is estimated at 1 to 6 percent of the general population. A cover doesn’t eliminate the concern, so anyone with a known latex allergy should choose a different material entirely.

Is “100% natural latex” a regulated claim?

Not in the US. The FTC’s Green Guides deliberately don’t address “natural” or “organic,” so the phrase carries no enforceable definition on a mattress. Certification is the only reliable check, which in this category means a GOLS certificate you can look up.
