What Does bluesign Approved Actually Mean?
Most textile certifications work backwards. Make the fabric, then test it for a list of nasty substances, then put a label on whatever passes.
bluesign flips it. It controls what goes into the factory in the first place, on the theory that a chemical never brought on site can’t end up in your jacket or the river next to the plant.
Short answer: it’s one of the more rigorous things on a garment label, with real audits and a public partner list, and it tells you almost nothing about the fiber. A bluesign APPROVED fabric can be conventional cotton or virgin polyester. It’s a chemistry and factory standard, owned by a commercial testing company, and it’s being renamed this year.
Input stream management, which is the whole idea
The bluesign SYSTEM organizes itself around three areas: people, environment, resources. Production sites get assessed on seven, including legal compliance, resource productivity, emission management, and health and safety.
The mechanism that makes it different is input stream management. In bluesign’s own words, instead of focusing only on finished products it “integrates the upstream parts of the supply chain,” so harmful substances are minimized or eliminated at the start. Only input stream management starting at the chemical supplier, the standard says, can guarantee compliance with its own restricted list.
Compare that with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, which tests every thread, button and accessory against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances. That’s output testing, and it’s a perfectly good approach to consumer safety. It just doesn’t help the workers in the dye house or the water downstream of it, because by the time you’re testing, the chemistry has already happened.
bluesign is also a recognized route to conformance with the ZDHC restricted substances list for manufacturers, and it sits at the highest tier of that scheme.
Three labels that mean three different things
This trips people up constantly. Worth pinning down.
A SYSTEM PARTNER is a company or facility, not a product. Any production site doing wet processing has to be one, and it gets assessed on the ground.
bluesign APPROVED is business-to-business, applying to individual chemical products and to fabrics and trims. It’s what a brand’s sourcing team buys against, and it lives in two searchable databases: bluesignFINDER for chemicals, bluesignGUIDE for fabrics and accessories.
bluesign PRODUCT is the finished consumer article. That’s the one on your jacket.
And there’s real machinery behind them. Initial assessment, re-assessment at least every three years, unannounced company visits, spot tests on approved chemicals and articles. The system partner list is public and republished monthly, running to roughly 950 entries with about 123 brands among them.
The 30 percent nobody mentions
Here’s the number that surprised us. It’s in bluesign’s own product criteria.
To carry the bluesign PRODUCT mark, at least 90 percent of the fabric in a garment must be bluesign APPROVED, calculated by surface area. And at least 30 percent of the accessories.
Thirty. Counted by item, not by weight or area. So a jacket can wear the mark while seven out of ten of its zippers, buttons, threads, cords and taped seams have never been assessed by bluesign at all. Those parts have to come from a qualified supplier and meet the brand’s own restricted list, which is something, but it isn’t the same thing.
The threshold rises to 40 percent for new products from 2027. Bags, backpacks and tents sit lower still, at 20 percent.
Two things the internet has backwards
Two corrections, because this gets told wrong in both directions.
bluesign does address labor, at least partly. Partners confirm by agreement that they comply with six ILO conventions covering forced labor, child labor, freedom of association, working hours capped at 48 a week, non-discrimination and maternity protection. But a real third-party-audited social programme like Fair Wear or SA8000 is only required for tier one partners, or where an assessment turns up an obvious abuse. So it’s a floor with a paper commitment behind it, not a labor certification.
It does have a climate target too: a 30 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 against a 2010 baseline, and net zero around 2050.
What it doesn’t touch at all is the fiber. Organic sourcing and animal welfare appear as things a partner should “prefer” and “take into consideration,” never as requirements. Nothing addresses how the cotton was farmed, whether wages are living wages, or what happens to the garment at the end of its life. So a bluesign jacket can be virgin polyester with no contradiction whatsoever.
Who owns it, and why that’s worth a sentence
bluesign started in St. Gallen, Switzerland in 2000. SGS, the testing and inspection giant, took a 50 percent stake in 2008 and raised it to 80 percent in 2011.
That’s not a scandal. We’d rather say it than not. bluesign is a paid commercial service that brands buy into, run by a company that sells testing. It publishes its criteria, names its methods and audits in person, which is more than plenty of seals manage. But it isn’t a public regulator, and the incentive structure is worth holding in mind, same as with any certification you meet in the greenwashing guide.
One thing that’s changing right now
As of April 2026 bluesign is retiring the bluesign APPROVED and bluesign PRODUCT marks and moving to a system called bluepass, split into consumer product, article and chemical product, each carrying a QR code linking to a bluesign-controlled verification page.
Existing marks stay valid where they’re already in use, so you’ll see both for a while. If you’re checking a garment in a year’s time and the old wording has vanished, that’s why.
So how much should it move you
bluesign is a strong signal about how a garment was made and a weak one about what it’s made from. Read it that way. It’s useful.
For a technical shell or anything dyed and coated heavily, it’s close to the best assurance available, because that’s exactly where the chemistry gets ugly. For a cotton t-shirt, GOTS tells you more. If you want both sides covered, look for bluesign alongside a fiber certification rather than instead of one, which is how the better activewear brands tend to do it.

For consumer safety alone, OEKO-TEX is direct. For the footprint of manufacturing, bluesign goes further.
Does bluesign mean a garment is made from sustainable materials?
No. bluesign assesses chemistry and manufacturing, not fiber. Organic and recycled sourcing appear in its criteria as preferences rather than requirements, so a bluesign APPROVED fabric can be conventional cotton or virgin polyester. Pair it with GOTS, GRS or GOLS if the material itself is what you’re asking about.
