Is Vegan Leather Just Plastic?
You may have seen the cactus leather bags, or the apple leather sneakers, or the pineapple leaf shoes, and assumed the answer was somewhere in the plant.
In 2021 a German testing institute cut nine of these materials open and looked.
Short answer: most of them are polyurethane on a textile backing, with plant material mixed in. That’s not nothing, and it isn’t what the marketing implies. One brand publishes the number itself: its performance grade is 42 percent polyurethane. Meanwhile PVC-based vegan leather is the worst option in the category, and it’s still sold as vegan.
They cut nine of them open
The FILK Freiberg Institute tested nine alternatives against real leather and a plain polyurethane-coated textile, and published the results in a peer-reviewed journal.
Its description of the cactus-based material: a coated textile with a compact polyurethane layer and a partially foamed polyurethane layer filled with particles of organic origin, on a polyester carrier. The apple-based material: compact polyurethane layers, a foamed polyurethane layer with organic particles, and a polyurethane-impregnated textile carrier. The grape-based one: compact polyurethane over a cellulose carrier. The pineapple one was different in kind, a cellulose non-woven with a thin polymeric coating.
The paper’s own summary line is the one to remember: “the bulk of the materials remains to consist of polyurethane.”
We should date that carefully. FILK tested single samples around 2020 and 2021, and at least one of those brands now states publicly that its material contains no polyurethane at all. Either it reformulated or the two accounts can’t both be right, and we can’t resolve it from here. What we can say is what an independent lab found when it looked.
One brand just tells you
Piñatex is the exception. It’s refreshing.
Ananas Anam publishes the composition. The base felt is 80 percent waste pineapple leaf fiber and 20 percent PLA. The standard material is coated with a water-based polyurethane resin making up 10 percent of the total. And the performance grade, the one durable enough for shoes, is 42 percent polyurethane.
The company also states plainly that Piñatex is not 100 percent biodegradable: only the substrate is, and only under controlled industrial conditions.
That’s a company being straight with you about a genuine trade-off, and it’s a good benchmark for what honest disclosure in this category looks like.
The durability gap is the part that matters
Sustainability arguments about materials tend to skip how long the thing lasts, which is strange, because that’s most of the footprint.
FILK measured it. Real leather: 39.5 newtons per square millimeter of tensile strength, 82.9 newtons per millimeter tear strength, and more than 200,000 flex cycles. The cactus material: 20.8, 37.2, and 30,000 flex cycles. Apple and grape managed 50,000. Pineapple hit 150,000 on flex despite low tensile strength. One teak-leaf material managed 100 cycles.
The relevant footwear standard asks for more than 80,000 flex cycles for a shoe upper. Only leather, Piñatex and the plain polyurethane-coated textile cleared it.
Breathability told a similar story, with leather at 4.6 against a required 0.8, while the cactus, apple and grape materials all came in below the threshold.
A shoe that cracks in a year isn’t a lower-impact shoe. It’s two shoes.
Polyurethane doesn’t meaningfully break down
The other claim worth checking is biodegradability, and it doesn’t survive contact with the literature.
Research on polyurethane microplastics found that conventional thermoplastic PU is not biodegradable, and that partial breakdown was achieved only under industrial composting conditions, with rates falling as cross-linking density rose. Industrial composting is not where a worn-out shoe goes. Landfill is.
FILK also screened for restricted substances and found several: butanone oxime, toluene, free isocyanate, a pesticide and traces of a phthalate plasticizer across the plant leathers, with considerable amounts of dimethylformamide and toluene in the reference polyurethane textile.
PVC is the one to actually avoid
Lost in the argument about plant content is that a lot of cheap vegan leather is PVC, and PVC is the worst material in the conversation.
It needs plasticizers to stay flexible, and the phthalate plasticizers of most concern are restricted in the EU to under 0.1 percent by weight in consumer articles. It’s chlorinated, which makes its end of life worse than polyurethane’s.
If a product just says vegan leather with no further detail and costs very little, PVC is the reasonable assumption. Polyurethane is the better plastic here, and “better plastic” is the accurate frame for this whole category.
A word about the labeling law
Italy banned the use of leather terminology for non-animal materials in 2020, which outlaws phrases like eco-leather and, read strictly, vegan leather. Portugal, France, Belgium and Spain have comparable protections.
The US is looser. FTC guidance says that where a product is made of non-leather material that appears to be leather, the fact that it isn’t leather should be disclosed, and suggests wording like imitation leather, vinyl, or plastic. Should, not must. And we found no FTC enforcement action against a vegan leather claim.
So how should you choose
Buy for the reason you actually have. If you don’t want animal products, that’s a complete reason and you don’t need it to also be the lowest-footprint option.
If footprint is the goal, buy the thing that lasts. A polyurethane shoe that survives five years beats one that cracks in eighteen months, and it beats leather on nothing if it doesn’t.
Prefer brands that publish composition. Piñatex does. Most don’t, and a brand that won’t tell you the polyurethane percentage has made a choice about what you’re allowed to know.
Avoid PVC, prefer water-based polyurethane where a brand names it, and treat “plant-based” as a claim about part of the material rather than all of it. That’s the pattern in our greenwashing guide, and it’s why the sneaker roundup weighs construction and take-back alongside materials.

Is vegan leather worse for the environment than real leather?
It depends almost entirely on durability, and independent testing found most alternatives failing the flex-cycle standard for shoe uppers that leather clears comfortably. Real leather carries the impacts of cattle farming and tanning; vegan leather is usually a fossil polymer that doesn’t biodegrade. Neither is clean, and the one that lasts longer is usually the better buy.
What is cactus leather actually made of?
When an independent lab tested it in 2021, it was a polyurethane coating with organic particles on a polyester textile backing. The manufacturer now states its material contains no polyurethane, so the two accounts conflict and we can’t resolve it. Ask for a current composition breakdown before paying a premium.
Is PU leather better than PVC leather?
Yes, clearly. PVC is chlorinated and needs plasticizers to stay flexible, several of which are restricted in the EU, and its end of life is worse. Polyurethane is still a plastic and it’s the better of the two by a wide margin, so a brand naming PU is telling you something useful.
Does vegan leather biodegrade?
Conventional polyurethane doesn’t meaningfully biodegrade, and research has found partial breakdown only under industrial composting conditions. Plant-based versions may have a biodegradable substrate under a coating that isn’t, which the makers who disclose it say directly.
