Does Antimicrobial Silver in Activewear Actually Work?

Somewhere on the label of your running top there’s probably a word like Polygiene, or HeiQ Pure, or Sanitized. The pitch is that it stops your shirt from smelling.

Short answer: silver does kill bacteria in a lab, and when researchers put treated and untreated shirts on actual people, the treated ones didn’t smell any better. Meanwhile the silver washes out into the water system, where it’s toxic to aquatic life at microgram levels. The EU has already refused to approve one silver biocide, and the reason wasn’t safety.

Start with what the law lets a brand say

There’s a reason the marketing always talks about the fabric and never about you.

Under the EPA’s treated articles exemption, a product treated with a pesticide to protect the article itself doesn’t need its own pesticide registration. Odor-causing bacteria are classified as a non-public-health concern, so “inhibits odor-causing bacteria in the fabric” sits inside the exemption.

Step outside it and you need registration. The EPA is explicit: an unregistered treated product “must not make public health claims, such as fights germs, provides antibacterial protection, or controls fungus.”

That’s why Sanitized carries its own disclaimer stating that treated articles will not protect any person against bacteria, viruses, fungi, dust mites or allergens. The company selling the treatment is telling you what it doesn’t do.

And the EPA does enforce it. In May 2025 Costco settled for just over $3 million, one of the largest FIFRA penalties on record, over unregistered pesticide products including antimicrobial work gloves. Hospeco paid $326,200 that July over three textile products including an “Antimicrobial Towel.”

The finish is not one thing

Worth knowing. These get treated as interchangeable and they aren’t.

Polygiene StayFresh is silver chloride, which the company describes as a salt naturally present in water and soil. HeiQ Pure is silver chloride held in a titanium dioxide matrix, releasing silver ions. Sanitized uses silver phosphate glass, silver nitrate or silver chloride on titanium dioxide. X-Static is different again: metallic silver bonded to the fiber surface rather than a salt.

Different chemistry. Different release behavior, different durability. A study of one tells you about one.

Then somebody put the shirts on people

Here’s the study that reframed it for us. Almost nobody runs this test.

Researchers at the University of Alberta had eight men wear polyester shirts against the armpit, some treated with a silver chloride finish and some not, then had a trained sensory panel score the odor by two separate methods.

The treated fabrics did not reduce odor intensity compared with untreated ones. Bacterial counts weren’t significantly lower either. And the same finish had passed standard in-vitro antimicrobial testing beforehand.

That gap is the whole story. A finish can kill bacteria on an agar plate and do nothing useful in a damp armpit for six hours, because a real underarm is a very different environment from a laboratory one.

Be fair about the size of it though. Eight people, one silver chloride finish, one fabric. It doesn’t prove every silver technology fails on every garment. It does mean nobody should be treating in-vitro results as proof of anything you’d notice.

The smell was mostly the polyester’s fault anyway

There’s a more useful finding underneath all this. The fiber did it.

Work from the same lab found polyester rated high for odor intensity while cotton and wool rated mid to low, and the difference wasn’t explained by bacterial numbers, which were similar across fabrics. A separate study of 26 people after a workout found polyester shirts smelled significantly more intense and less pleasant than cotton, with one bacterial group found almost exclusively on the synthetics.

So the material is generating the problem the finish is sold to solve. Merino wool doesn’t need a biocide, and it’s the reason wool base layers have the reputation they do.

Where the silver ends up

A 2008 study measured silver in six types of sock, finding up to 1,360 micrograms per gram of fabric and as much as 650 micrograms leaching into 500 milliliters of water. The particles ran from 10 to 500 nanometers, released as both colloidal and ionic silver.

The researchers modeled wastewater treatment and concluded plants could cope with the influent. Their caveat is the interesting part: the silver concentration may limit disposal of the resulting biosolids as agricultural fertilizer.

For context on why anyone cares, the EPA’s water quality criteria put the acute freshwater threshold for silver at 3.2 micrograms per liter, and 1.9 in saltwater. This is a metal that matters to aquatic life at very small numbers.

Europe said no, and not for the reason you’d guess

In 2024 the EU approved silver zinc zeolite for use as a fiber and leather preservative, with conditions restricting textile treatments and outdoor use.

Five years earlier it had refused silver zeolite for two other uses on the grounds that “sufficient efficacy has not been demonstrated.”

Read that again. A regulator turned it down because it didn’t work well enough, not because it was hazardous. That’s a rare thing to see in writing, and it lines up uncomfortably well with what the wear trial found.

So what we’d actually do

Don’t pay extra for it. The one trial that tested it the way you’d actually use it found no benefit, and the technology’s own EU review has an efficacy problem.

If odor is the thing you’re solving, the fiber does more than the finish. Merino wool for base layers, cotton where performance allows, and accept that polyester will smell whatever is sprayed on it. Wash gym kit promptly rather than leaving it balled up in a bag, which does more than any biocide.

Is silver in clothing safe to wear?
