Are Bamboo Toothbrush Bristles Actually Biodegradable?

You bought the bamboo toothbrush. Handle composts, problem solved, one less bit of plastic in the world.

Then you looked at the bristles and wondered.

Short answer: they’re nylon. On every bamboo toothbrush you can currently buy. Some are made from castor bean oil rather than petroleum, which is a real improvement in feedstock and changes nothing about what happens when you throw them away. No toothbrush bristle anywhere is certified compostable, and the reason is stranger than you’d guess.

Nylon, in every one of them

Toothbrush filaments are nylon, in a handful of grades: nylon-6,6, nylon-6,10, nylon-6,12, or polybutylene terephthalate. That’s what the industry patents specify, and they specify it for one reason.

Wet stiffness. A bristle has to hold its shape in a wet mouth for three months. Materials that break down in water are, by definition, bad at that. The property that makes a bristle work is the same property that stops it composting, and nobody has solved it.

You’ll see castor-oil-derived nylon described as plant-based, and it is. Arkema, which makes the best-known version, says on its own product page that the polymer is 100 percent bio-based and lists exactly one end-of-life route: recyclable. Not compostable. Not biodegradable.

Bio-based describes where the carbon came from. Biodegradable describes where it goes. Two different questions, and the packaging tends to blur them.

Even the best brand can’t keep its story straight

We went to check what brands actually say, and found the most-recommended bamboo brush contradicting itself across two of its own pages.

Its FAQ says the bristles are 100 percent castor bean oil, USDA certified biobased, and “biodegradable” but not legally classifiable as compostable, and will eventually return to the soil on a timeline depending on soil activity. Its disposal page tells you to recycle those same bristles locally or through a mail-back scheme because they are not biodegradable.

We don’t think that’s dishonesty so much as a company caught between what it wishes were true and what its own disposal instructions require. Other brands are blunter. Georganics calls its bristles BPA-free nylon derived from rapeseed oil and describes them as recyclable, full stop. The Humble Co says nylon and offers no disposal guidance at all.

There’s a legal edge to this too. The FTC’s rule is that an unqualified “degradable” claim is deceptive if the item doesn’t completely decompose within one year after customary disposal. A nylon bristle in a landfill does not.

Why no bristle is certified, and it isn’t only chemistry

Here’s the fact that reframed this for us.

BPI, the body that certifies compostable products in North America, restricts certification to items “associated with desirable feedstocks like food scraps and yard trimmings.” A toothbrush is not food waste or yard waste, so it’s ineligible by category before anyone tests the material at all.

Its database holds nearly 50,000 certified products across eight categories: agriculture, bags, packaging, foodservice, resins, components, molded fiber, pet waste. There is no oral care category. There is no personal care category.

So even a bristle that really did break down in a compost heap couldn’t get the certificate. That’s worth knowing before you go looking for one, and worth knowing when a brand tells you none exists because the science isn’t there. Half of it is the science. Half of it is how certification is scoped.

One nylon does have real peer-reviewed biodegradability, incidentally: nylon-4, which research shows is broken down by bacteria common in activated sludge. Activated sludge is what’s at a sewage treatment plant. Not your compost bin, and nobody makes toothbrushes from it.

The result that upsets the whole premise

There’s exactly one peer-reviewed lifecycle assessment of toothbrushes, published in the British Dental Journal in 2020. It compared four types across every impact category.

Its finding, verbatim: all products used plastic nylon bristles, and all except the bamboo one also used polypropylene handles. And the conclusion: “The bamboo and replaceable head plastic toothbrushes had the lowest impact in all categories.”

Tied. A plastic toothbrush with a handle you keep and heads you swap performs as well as bamboo across the board.

That’s a more useful result than a win for either side. What drives the footprint isn’t the handle material, it’s how much material moves through your bathroom over a decade.

About that billion-toothbrushes number

While we were checking things, we tried to source the figure everyone quotes: a billion toothbrushes a year in the US, 23 billion worldwide.

It traces to one National Geographic article from 2019, and it isn’t a measurement. It’s population multiplied by the American Dental Association’s recommendation to replace your brush every three to four months. In other words, it’s what would be thrown away if everybody actually followed the advice, which they don’t.

The ADA guidance itself is real and worth following. The waste number built on top of it is a projection, and it gets repeated as though somebody counted.

So what do you actually do with the brush

Pull the bristles out. Pliers, one tuft at a time, until the head is bare, then compost or reuse the handle. Brush With Bamboo publishes exactly this instruction, and the lifecycle study modeled disposal that way too, staples included.

If pulling bristles with pliers sounds like more commitment than you signed up for, that’s a fair reaction, and it’s the honest cost of the swap. The alternative is a mail-back scheme where one exists.

And if you want the lowest-impact option on the evidence, the study says a good handle with replaceable heads is as good as bamboo. That’s not the answer we expected to write in a zero-waste bathroom guide, and it’s what the evidence says.
